Performance Santa Fe concludes its 81st season with a performance for all jazz aficionados: Fred Hersch & Friends!
Fred Hersch, praised as “the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz” (Vanity Fair), has garnered critical acclaim over the past three decades as a musician, composer, and bandleader. Known for bringing unparalleled emotional depth, groundbreaking imagination, and unwavering consistency of quality to all of his artistic endeavors, Hersch is a 12-time Grammy nominee with a long-term, quiet influence on some of today’s most prominent jazz musicians, including Jason Moran, Vijay Iyer, and Brad Mehldau. “When it comes to the art of the solo piano in jazz, there are two classes of performers: Fred Hersch and everybody else” (All About Jazz). In addition to receiving some of jazz’s most prestigious awards, Hersch’s graceful and revealing autobiography, Good Things Happen Slowly, was named one of 2017’s Five Best Memoirs by the Washington Post and New York Times.
Performance Santa Fe will be presenting Fred Hersch alongside clarinetist Anat Cohen, who the Jazz Journalists Association has voted Clarinetist of the Year nine years in a row, and the “austere and elegant” (New York Timesvocalist Kate McGarry, who received a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal CD.
