[Rob Kapilow] leaps into the void dividing music analysis from appreciation and fills it with exhilarating details and sensations.

—New York Times

The sophisticated rhymes and erudite imagery of Cole Porter’s lyrics made him one of the nation’s preeminent songsmiths. But an overlooked element of Porter’s legacy is the music underlying those lyrics, which composer and NPR music commentator Rob Kapilow argues is essential to understanding Porter’s genius.

Kapilow has brought the joy and wonder of classical music – and unraveled some of its mysteries – to audiences of all ages and backgrounds for over 30 years. Characterized by his unique ability to create an “aha” moment for his audiences and collaborators, whatever their level of musical sophistication or naiveté, Kapilow’s work brings music into people’s lives: opening new ears to musical experiences and helping people to listen actively rather than just hear.

In this very special evening filmed in July at New York’s Kaufman Music Center, Kapilow is joined by Broadway stars Sally Wilfert and Michael Winther in a witty and insightful exploration of Cole Porter’s controversial music as part of Kapilow’s popular discussion series What Makes It Great? Porter’s numerous hit songs include “Night and Day,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” and “You’re the Top.” Many of his songs became standards noted for their clever lyricism—but in the early-to-mid 1900s they often ran into issues of censorship.
