Performance Santa Fe announces its 2020-2021 season

Santa Fe, NM — Performance Santa Fe announced today its exciting 2020-2021 season, which features more performances at more venues across Santa Fe than ever before. The presenting organization’s 84th season marks the first year of programming by Executive + Artistic Director Chad Hilligus, who stepped into the role in July 2019 and promises to take the organization’s strong decades-long legacy to the next level. “My career as a producer, director, and performer has taken me all over the world and shaped my approach to artistic programming,” Hilligus says. “Our 2020-2021 season reflects my vision to build on PSF’s reputation as a cultural leader in Santa Fe’s thriving arts community and to expand the scope and innovation of our offerings.”

The 2020-2021 Season

Performance Santa Fe’s 2020-2021 season runs from July 19, 2020 through June 12, 2021 and features 29 performances of music, dance, and theater at seven venues across Santa Fe, including a return to the Santa Fe Opera after nearly a decade away and the organization’s first time presenting at Museum Hill’s Milner Plaza. This marks a significant increase in the amount of performances and venues that the non-profit organization has offered from past seasons, which reached a high of 18 events at 4 venues during its 2019-2020 season.

More diversity of genres is also represented this season with offerings of chamber, classical, and jazz music, as well as dance, theater, and special engagements. Highlights include some of the world’s most renowned performers like Joyce DiDonato, Vijay Iyer, and Pinchas Zukerman, along with several new and sensational surprises like Piaf! The Show and global cabaret phenomenon Meow Meow. 

Performance Santa Fe’s notable increase in offerings during its 2020-2021 season is a reflection of Executive + Artistic Director Chad Hilligus’s artistic goals. “My vision is more,” says Hilligus. “More variety, more diversity, more performances, and more venues, while maintaining the highest level of artistic excellence. We want to offer something for everyone throughout the year.”

In line with this vision of more, Performance Santa Fe’s 84th season also sees an increase in collaborations with other arts organizations, including co-presentations with The Santa Fe Symphony and the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum.

“This is an exciting time for the arts community in Santa Fe and I’m proud to be a part of a group of young arts leaders who share a spirit of collaboration and the belief that we can accomplish more together,” Hilligus says. “Daniel Crupi, Cody Hartley, and I all feel strongly about finding creative ways to connect the visual and performing arts and that our audiences will benefit from this kind of cultural innovation.”

Lara Downes: Holes in the Sky

• Inspired by a quote from Georgia O’Keeffe, trailblazing American pianist and collaborator Lara Downes surrounds herself with an impressive lineup of some of today’s leading female artists — Alicia Hall Moran, Simone Dinnerstein, Magos Herrera, and Ifetayo Ali-Landing — for a multi-genre, star-studded concert event. A thoughtful collection of works celebrating the contributions of women to the past, present, and future of American music, Holes in the Sky tells the story of what women and girls can contribute to the world when they are given a chance — their dreams can make holes in the sky. This extraordinary program will feature two world premieres inspired by the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum collection.

  As a special add-on experience, Performance Santa Fe is offering an exclusive reception and private preview concert at the O’Keeffe on Saturday night before the mainstage event at the Lensic on Sunday. Tickets available for $150 each. Seating is limited to 60 people.

• Almaviva and Papageno together at last! Former Santa Fe Opera Apprentices Jack Swanson and Benjamin Taylor return this season in two of opera’s most iconic roles. Following recent principal debuts with Los Angeles Opera, Norwegian Opera, and Glyndebourne, Jack Swanson will present Schumann’s Dichterliebe to kick off this year’s Festival of Song Series. With a distinctive high lyric voice, perfectly suited to the acrobatic arias of Rossini, he is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after young tenors in the opera world. Joining Swanson is booming baritone Benjamin Taylor, who is making his Santa Fe principal debut as Papageno in The Magic Flute after two successful seasons as an Apprentice Artist. A recent graduate of the prestigious Pittsburgh Opera Resident Artist Program, Taylor returns to Pittsburgh this season for his principal debut in Carmen.

• Dramatic soprano Alexandra LoBianco makes her Santa Fe Opera debut this season as the Foreign Princess in Rusalka. Lauded for her versatility and musicality, LoBianco recently stepped in as Leonore in Fidelio with the Wiener Staatsoper while simultaneously performing the title role in Turandot. She returns to the Lyric Opera of Chicago this season for Wagner’s Ring Cycle before making her Metropolitan Opera debut in Der Rosenkavalier. Internationally acclaimed bass Scott Conner made his Santa Fe Opera debut in 2018 as Mustafa in The Italian Girl in Algiers and returns this season as Don Basilio in The Barber of Seville. Regularly appearing with many of the world’s greatest opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Paris National Opera, and Covent Garden, Conner is often praised for his rich, robust bass notes, elegant stature, and magnetic presence.

The Show, a musical celebration of the life and work of the legendary chanteuse Edith Piaf, makes its way to Santa Fe as part of an extended world tour. • The Martha Graham Dance Company has been recognized as a primal artistic force since 1926. Thirty years after Graham’s ashes were ceremoniously scattered at El Santuario de Chimayó, the company she built into the world’s finest example of modern dance makes its long-awaited return to Santa Fe. To celebrate the 75^th anniversary of Aaron Copland’s most famous ballet Appalachian Spring, the dancers will be accompanied live by members of The Santa Fe Symphony playing the original 13-piece chamber orchestration. The program also includes The Auditions by choreographer Troy Schumacher and composer Augusta Read Thomas. This new work has been carefully designed to complement Graham’s classic and offers ways to consider the themes of Appalachian Spring in the modern world.

Praised by the San Francisco Chronicle for its “tonal luxuriance and crisply etched clarity,” Chanticleer is known around the world as “an orchestra of voices” for its seamless blend of 12 male voices ranging from soprano to bass, and its original interpretations of vocal literature from Renaissance to jazz, pop, and contemporary compositions. • Jazz pianist and composer Vijay Iyer (pronounced VID-jay EYE-yer) has carved out a unique path as an influential, prolific, and shape-shifting presence in modern music. Iyer has been voted Downbeat Magazine’s Jazz Artist of the Year four times — 2018, 2016, 2015, and 2012 — and Jazz Times’ 2017 Artist of the Year. Additionally, Iyer was named a United States Artists Fellow in 2017, a MacArthur Fellow in 2013, and a Doris Duke Performing Artist in 2012. He also holds a lifetime appointment at Harvard University. Iyer’s sextet of virtuoso improvisers (Downbeat Magazine’s 2018 Jazz Group of the Year) brings a wealth of jazz history to music ranging from the thrillingly explosive to the cathartically elegiac, with entrancing hooks, rhythmic muscle, and an elemental spirit.

• Following the triumphantly successful world premiere of Charlotte Ballet’s “fairy-tailored” Sleeping Beauty last season, British choreographer Matthew Hart returns with another iconic storybook ballet. Like the title character herself, Cinderella: A Fairy-Tailored Classic undergoes a magical transformation for this masterful production. Featuring all of the classic characters and a score by Prokofiev, this abbreviated two-hour tale will make its world premiere in Charlotte in March 2021 before making its way to Santa Fe in June.

• From acclaimed opera producer and director Cath Brittan comes Birds in the Moon — a traveling chamber opera staged in a mobile, state-of-the-art, self-sufficient…shipping container? Yes! Featuring a musical score by Mark Grey, one of the most unique aspects of this chamber opera is the set itself. Premiering in September 2020 at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica, the sides and top of the container open up as the story unfolds, exposing the lights, sound, set, live video and props, all powered by solar batteries — a real-life music box! Accompanied by San Francisco’s Friction Quartet, the libretto is loosely based on 17^th century scientist Charles Morton’s eccentric theory that birds migrate to the moon.

2020-2021 Subscriptions + Tickets

Subscriptions to Performance Santa Fe’s 2020-2021 season are available May 4 – May 31, 2020 for patrons who purchase a minimum of 10 tickets. Subscription order forms are available at PerformanceSantaFe.org. Special Engagements are not eligible for purchase with subscriptions.

• 20% Subscription — Purchase 20+ tickets to receive a 20% discount.
• 15% Subscription — Purchase 15-19 tickets to receive a 15% discount.
• 10% Subscription — Purchase 10-14 tickets to receive a 10% discount.
