Performance Santa Fe is pleased to announce a competition for short operas and music theater pieces. The winning pieces selected in the first Brief Encounters competition will be premiered in the summer of 2017 as part of Performance Santa Fe’s Festival of Song.
The competition is open to all composers and librettists.
Entrants are to submit an opera, music theater piece, or hybrid of the two that is between five minutes and 20 minutes in length. This should be the full piece, not an excerpt.
Pieces must written in English, or predominantly in English if non-English-speaking characters play roles in the drama. Pieces are required to be scored for piano only and a maximum of four singers, with no more than two characters of the same voice type, and with no chorus. There is a special category for composers and librettists under 21 years of age and a special category for a piece based on a fairy tale.
Deadline for entries is February 28, 2017. The application and processing fee is $35, check payable to Performance Santa Fe. Only one submission per composer/librettist team, please.
Submit application and PDFs to competition@performancesantafe.org or physical scores to Performance Santa Fe, 324 Paseo de Peralta, Suite A, Santa Fe, NM, 87501, telephone (505) 984-8759. Scores will not be returned, but all works remain the property of their authors, and no pieces will be performed without the permission of their creators.
