The most popular of satires—it never could be missed!
Performance Santa Fe presents its annual free Family Opera, showcasing PSF EPIK Artists and professional opera singers!
Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado has been one of the most-performed musical theater works of all time since its 672-performance opening run in 1885. The first New York performance, a mere five months later, was described as “extremely amusing” and lauded for their “uncommon brilliancy.” (The New York Times)
Gilbert and Sullivan disguised pointed commentary about English society and norms with a Japanese setting. The story follows a wandering minstrel (actually the son of the Mikado—the Japanese emperor —in disguise) as he tracks down his beloved and attempts to evade an elderly admirer and a cheap tailor-turned-overzealous executioner. Witty dialogue, memorable music (including “I’ve got a little list”), and timeless mockery guarantee a hilarious time!
