Orchestra’s Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve performances will be uplifting

On the eve of major holidays, Joseph Illick isn’t looking to program obscure, challenging pieces people aren’t familiar with or to bring them down with dark, depressing melodies.
Instead, he will be leading the Performance Santa Fe Orchestra in a performance intended to lift the spirits. It won’t be holiday music, but it will be music with a holiday spirit.
“The symphonies are all joyous, triumphant. The concerti are brilliant,” said Illick, artistic director of Performance Santa Fe.
Consider, for example, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, slated to begin the Christmas Eve program, which moves from tragedy to triumph, he said.
And on New Year’s Eve, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 starts right out on a heroic note and unfolds to reveal the composer’s developing genius as he begins to stray from the style of Haydn and Mozart and discover his own voice.
That and much more will be part of the musical feast that Performance Santa Fe is laying out for what is now a more than three-decade tradition of presenting programs on the eves of Christmas and New Year’s.
