Performance Santa Fe is thrilled to continue a decades-old tradition: orchestral performances on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve!

This year, Performance Santa Fe’s annual Christmas Eve concert—a tradition that goes back to 1981—will see the return of the “astonishing virtuoso” (Neue Zurcher Zeitungpianist Joyce Yang, who joins the PSF Orchestra to play one of the Romantic period’s greatest pieces, Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.

Praised for her “poetic and sensitive pianism” (The Washington Post), Yang entered the international spotlight in 2005, at just the age of 19, when she became the youngest musician to ever win a medal at the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. She has since gone on to play as a soloist with every major orchestra in the U.S. and was recently nominated for a 2017 GRAMMY Award.

Conductor Joe Illick will also lead the PSF Orchestra in one of the most popular symphonies of all time, Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, also known as the New World Symphony.

Since the early 1990s, Performance Santa Fe has been bidding farewell to the previous year and ringing in the new with a magical New Year’s Eve concert. This year, audiences will delight in a special orchestra performance of one of the most recognized classical compositions of all time: Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Virtuoso violinist Augustin Hadelich will also join conductor Joe Illick and the PSF Orchestra to play Mendelssohn’s celebrated Violin Concerto.
Praised for his “dazzling technique, gorgeous tone, and penetrating spontaneous musicality” (The New York Times), Hadelich is the winner of a 2016 GRAMMY Award for “Best Classical Instrumental Solo” and a 2017 GRAMMY Award-nominee (alongside pianist Joyce Yang) for “Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance.”
As in year’s past, the 5:00 pm Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve performances will be preceded by an afternoon family concert of the same program that welcomes first-time symphony-goers of all ages—this year, at 1:00 pm.
