The Kings of Swing are back!
“I started playing when I was 6, but I didn’t start practicing until I was 12,” (Scholastic interview) says trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. “I didn’t want to get that ring around my lips from practicing the trumpet, because I thought the girls wouldn’t like me.” Once he got serious about practicing, it is hard to describe his rise as anything other than meteoric. “The next great historical figure in jazz,” (The New York Times) as he is called, became a member of the New Orleans Philharmonic at 14, signed a contract with Columbia Records at 21, and has won 9 Grammys in both classical and jazz categories.
Marsalis founded Jazz at Lincoln Center, his 15-piece jazz orchestra, in 1987 as part of his mission to preserve the classic swing jazz that is his musical heritage. The program was so successful that in 1996 it was installed as a constituent at Lincoln Center, on the same level as the NYC Ballet, the Met, and the NY Philharmonic. The group members, whose sound has been described as “fresh and energetic,” hail from a number of musical backgrounds and perform and teach with prestigious institutions all over the world.

Watch some of the best jazz musicians in the world as they perform in a variety of styles for a night of toe-tapping virtuosity!
