New York City-based contemporary dance company, Parsons Dance, has been pursuing its mission of delivering positive, affirming, life-enriching experiences to its audiences for over 30 years. Founded in 1985 by “one of the greatest movers of modern dance” (New York Times) David Parsons and Tony Award-winning lighting designer Howell Binkley, the company maintains a repertory of more than 75 works by Parsons, who has received many accolades throughout his career, including three Choreography Fellowship Grants from the National Endowment of the Arts, the American Choreography Award, the Dance Magazine Award, a Howard Gilman Fellowship, the Dance Masters of American annual award, and the Capezio ACE award.
In addition to performing works by Parsons, the company—frequently praised for its “raw, manic athleticism” (New York Times)—invites lauded choreographers to re-stage works from the American canon and frequently collaborates with iconic artists, including Dr. Billy Taylor, Allen Toussaint, Stephen Schwartz, amongst others. Most recently, Parsons has also begun commissioning works from young up-and-coming choreographers through their newly launched GenerationNOW Fellowship.
As part of Performance Santa Fe’s education offerings this season, Parsons Dance will teach a master class for NMSA dance students on Thursday, April 5 as well as give a special matinee performance to SFPS 3rd graders on Friday, April 6.
