Performance Santa Fe presents Third Coast Percussion featuring Philip Glass’s first-ever work for percussion ensemble!

In 2005, four classical percussion students at Northwestern University began giving educational concerts in Chicago. Fourteen years, one Grammy award, and numerous world premieres later, the members of Third Coast Percussion — David Skidmore, Robert Dillon, Peter Martin, and Sean Connors — continue to explore and expand the sonic possibilities of percussion and, in doing so, redefine the world’s perception of modern classical music. With over 300 instruments at their disposal, from tuned cowbells to Thai gongs and metal pipes, TCP creates enveloping musical landscapes that critics are calling “commandingly elegant” (New York Times), “sonically spectacular” (Chicago Tribune), and “inspirational” (Minnesota Star-Tribune).

Known for their extensive performances and recordings of works by composers such as Steve Reich, Terry Riley, and Arvo Pärt, Third Coast Percussion has taken on its biggest commission to date: Philip Glass’ first-ever work for percussion ensemble. Co-commissioned by Performance Santa Fe, Perpetulum blends a youthful joy and enthusiasm for the sounds of percussion with the minimalist voice for which Glass is known.

Third Coast Percussion member Robert Dillon says, “It’s been an amazing honor for us to commision this new work from Philip Glass, an artist who has unquestionably shaped the direction of music today. We’re certain that Perpetulum will be an important part of the repertoire for percussion ensembles around the world for decades to come.”

In addition to Philip Glass, the quartet’s Santa Fe program includes works by Mark Applebaum, Third Coast Percussion, August Read Thomas, and Devonté Hynes. All who attend the October 1 performance at the Lensic will leave with a new appreciation for what percussion can achieve.
