San Francisco-based Kronos Quartet is one of the most celebrated and influential groups of our time. Over its four decades-long career, the iconic group has performed thousands of concerts worldwide, released over 60 recordings that showcase extraordinary creativity and technical expertise, collaborated with the globe’s most influential composers and performers, won over 40 prestigious awards, and commissioned hundreds of new arrangements — from the classical milieu and beyond — for string quartet. In short, “The Kronos Quartet has broken the boundaries of what string quartets do” (New York Times).
The Grammy-winning group has further broadened the scope of what string quartets can accomplish in their collaboration with Oscar-nominated filmmakers Sam Green and Joe Bini. Merging live performance, storytelling, and cinematic imagery, A Thousand Thoughts is “as magical an amalgamation as anything you can imagine” (Los Angeles Times). Onscreen, the quartet’s extensive history unfolds through captivating archival footage and filmed interviews with such luminaries as Philip Glass, Terry Riley, Tanya Tagaq, and Steve Reich. Onstage, Kronos performs carefully selected works from its vast repertoire while Green narrates in real time. “It’s a pensive, rewarding, and touching experience. You feel humbled and awed to watch these performers in action…” (Forbes).
