Santa Fe, NM – Experience stars from the Santa Fe Opera in an up close and personal setting during Performance Santa Fe’s annual Festival of Song. This season, Festival of Song offers an exquisite showcase of mini-operas by three renowned composers, and intimate recitals by opera stars Anna Christy and Paula Murrihy. A meet-the-artist reception follows all three performances.

Festival of song: brief encounters

Kicking off our Festival of Song, Brief Encounters tells the story of love and marriage through three fifteen-minute operas by acclaimed composer-librettist Mark Adamo; Music Director and Principal Composer of the Fort Worth Opera Joe Illick; and “arguably the world’s most popular 21st-century opera and art song composer” (The Wallstreet JournalJake Heggie. Five rising stars of the opera world—mezzo-soprano Kate Tombaugh, soprano Maren Weinberger, baritone Samuel Schultz, tenor Javier Abreu, and bass Anthony Reed—bring the mini-operas to life with Joe Illick at the piano and William Florescu, General Director of Milwaukee’s Florentine Opera, lending his guidance as stage director.
As a special addition, fifteen-year-old Ezra Shcolnik, one of Performance Santa Fe’s former EPIK Artists and current student at The Colburn School in Los Angeles, will premiere his four-minute madrigal for five voices.

Courtesy of The Santa Fe Opera, soprano Anna Christy continues our Festival of Song with an intimate one-hour recital on August 4. The New York Times has praised the “agile, clear voice and manic energy” of Christy, who plays Morgana in this summer’s production of Alcina. Christy is sure to delight audiences as Joe Illick accompanies her on piano.

festival of song: Paula murrihy

Singing the role of Prince Orlovsky in Die Fledermaus at The Santa Opera this summer, mezzo-soprano Paula Murrihy wraps up our 81st Season’s Festival of Song on August 20. Tanya Blaich, a current faculty member of New England Conservatory, will accompany Murrihy on piano.
