Is there a better way to begin a new year than with the classical world’s magnum opus?
Performance Santa Fe presents Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Ever since its momentous 1824 premiere, the Ninth has been a hymn for all humanity, an anthem of protest, a celebration of freedom, and a song of joy. Tens of thousands of musicians perform it every year across the world. It has become part of our collective consciousness. Friedrich Nietzsche terms it thus: “At a certain place in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, [the free spirit] might feel that he is floating above the earth in a starry dome, with the dream of immortality in his heart; all the stars seem to glimmer around him, and the earth seems to sink ever deeper downwards.”
Sparklingsoprano Ellie Dehn (Opera News), “powerfulmezzo-soprano Jodi Karem (Cape Cod Times), “smooth, deeply richtenor Nicholas Simpson (DC Theater Arts), and “dark, focusedbass Matthew Treviño join the Performance Santa Fe Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Joe Illick.
Our 1:00 PM Family Concert welcomes first-time orchestra-goers of all ages for a thrilling chance to experience classical music in an informative and informal context.
