Experience the epic and heartwarming music of Tchaikovsky, conducted by Joe Illick, at Performance Santa Fe’s Opening Orchestra Concert.

The Performance Santa Fe Orchestra, led by Joe Illick, will present two of Tchaikovsky’s best-known and loved works. Tchaikovsky was a brilliant Romantic composer famous for his melodies and the color, scale and depth of his works. The composer especially loved his “picturesque” (TSO program notes) First Symphony “Winter Daydreams,” and it will be followed by his beloved violin concerto. The original dedicatee, Hungarian virtuoso Leopold Auer, declared it “unplayable,” and it is still known as one of the most difficult works for the violin.
But that is no problem for James Ehnes, the concerto’s soloist. “Is there any better violinist in the world at the moment than James Ehnes?” (Scottsman) is the question of the moment. The Grammy-winning Canadian star, who began playing at age 4, plays a Golden period Stradivarius and has performed all over the planet. Don’t miss the “dazzling open flourish” (Seen and Heard International) of the “breathtakingly expressive” (New York Classical Review) violinist, backed by the soaring expression of the Performance Santa Fe Orchestra.
The 1:00 PM Family Preview is an unparalleled opportunity to introduce newcomers young and old to the wondrous art and tingling expectation of live classical music.
