Performance Santa Fe presents the SFJAZZ Collective!
Founded in 2004 in San Francisco, the SFJAZZ Collective is comprised of eight of the most respected performers and composers at work in jazz today—Warren Wolf, Miguel Zenón, Robin Eubanks, David Sánchez, Etienne Charles, Edward Simon, Matt Brewer, and Obed Calvaire. Known for their pioneering approach, each season the all-star ensemble prepares new arrangements by an honored artist along with newly commissioned pieces by each Collective member. “The Collective demonstrates that decades-old music needn’t lose its contemporary relevance — not, at least, in the hands of a group this encyclopedic in its knowledge of tradition, but just as versed in the foundation of jazz as a living, breathing and forward-reaching thing” (All About Jazz). Over the past 14 years, the SFJAZZ Collective has prepared programs honoring such greats as John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Thelonius Monk, Stevie Wonder, and Chick Corea.
In Santa Fe, the Collective will perform innovative new arrangements of legendary Brazilian Composer Antônio Carlos Jobim alongside new compositions. Jobim merged Brazilian popular song with jazz to form the bossa nova style, a new and wildly popular hybrid that has captivated listeners from its inception in the 1960s to the present day.
In addition to enjoying a captivating performance, audience members will have a chance to meet the members of the Collective during a post-performance “Offstage Reception” at the Agave Lounge in the Eldorado Hotel. Tickets to the reception are available through the Performance Santa Fe office.
