Joe Illick presents Performance Santa Fe’s annual celebration of Richard Wagner’s music!
There is no figure in classical music as simultaneously revolutionary, controversial, and admired as Richard Wagner. Join Joe Illick as he guides the audience through an evening of speech and song centered on Wagner’s famous opera, Tannhäuser.
The opera was composed in 1845 and innovatively intertwines the Sängerkrieg (a legendary minstrels’ contest held in Wartburg, Germany in 1207) and the 14th-century poet Tannhäuser’s own legendary account of his life and love, the Buβlied (Poem of Atonement). At its core is the conflict between courtly love (its courtesy and customs drawn in the Sängerkrieg) and sensual love (with all of its tragedies, longings, and regrets), as told in the Buβlied.
With signature warmth, humour, and intelligence, Joe Illick will take you through the questions these tales present and the music that they inspired. Tenor Nicholas Simpson will perform selected pieces, with Joe Illick at piano.
