Drummer Marcus Gilmore and bassist Larry Grenadier join Redman in performance of works by Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Wayne Shorter

Santa Fe, NM, March 29, 2023 – Hailed as being “among the most accomplished living practitioners of the jazz tenor saxophone” (NPR Music), Joshua Redman presents a celebration of the power of three. Saxophone, bass, and drums make up a classic trio format playing compositions from three of Redman’s favorite musicians—Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Wayne Shorter. Following the music wherever it leads, Redman and his bandmates breathe new improvisational life into works Redman considers “not just relevant but foundational.”

About the Artists

Joshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists to have emerged in the past decades. Born in Berkeley, California, Redman is the son of legendary saxophonist Dewey Redman and dancer Renee Shedroff. In 1991 Redman graduated from Harvard College summa cum laude and had already been accepted by Yale Law School, but deferred entrance for what he believed was only going to be one year. Instead, he moved to New York City and immediately found himself immersed in the city’s burgeoning jazz scene. Five months later Redman was named winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition. Noted for his ability to perceive and develop prodigious talent early on, Redman formed his first permanent quartet as a bandleader in 1994, which resulted in his seminal work MoodSwing, with Brad Mehldau on piano, Christian McBride on bass, and Brian Blade on drums. These musicians have gone on to become some of the most influential musicians and bandleaders in modern jazz. Since then, Redman has worked and played with a vast array of jazz luminaries, released numerous albums (Warner & Nonesuch), and has garnered top honors in critics and readers polls of DownBeat, Jazz Times, The Village Voice and Rolling Stone.

As one of the most admired, accomplished bassists working in jazz today, Larry Grenadier has been praised as “a deeply intuitive” musician by The New York Times. Grenadier has created an expansive body of work in collaboration with many of the genre’s most inventive, influential musicians— from playing with saxophone icons Joe Henderson and Stan Getz, performing alongside pianist Brad Mehldau, working with the likes of Paul Motian and Pat Metheny, and co-leading the cooperative trio Fly (with Mark Turner and Jeff Ballard) and quartet Hudson (with John Scofield, John Medeski and Jack DeJohnette). Over a performing and recording career that now spans three decades, Grenadier’s instrumental virtuosity, instantly recognizable tone, uncommon artistic sensitivity, imagination, and curiosity have made him an in-demand collaborator.

Marcus Gilmore is a multi-Grammy Award winning drummer and composer. While Marcus can be found performing and recording with a diverse array of the finest musicians in the world, he has also demonstrated his multifaceted musical talents and personality through long term solo projects with his own groups: Actions Speak and Silouhwav. In 2020, he performed his first orchestral composition, titled Pulse, with members of the Cape Town Philharmonic. Marcus, in all his playing, integrates a unique style where he is musically expanding rhythm while supporting the great musicians with whom he plays. He has performed/recorded with Herbie Hancock, Mulatu Astatke, Ravi Coltrane, Common, Thundercat, Vijay Iyer, Wadada Leo Smith, Flying Lotus, Bilal, Talib Kweli, Queen Latifah, Black Thought, Zakir Hussain, Esperanza Spalding, Nicholas Payton, Robert Glasper, Taylor McFerrin, and more.
