Jupiter Ensemble is joined by mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre for an evening of vocal and instrumental music

Santa Fe, NM, February 14, 2023 – Jupiter Ensemble, under the artistic direction of lutenist Thomas Dunford, performs a full program of works by Antonio Vivaldi. Based in France and touring internationally, Jupiter Ensemble was born in 2018 from the friendship between Dunford and other brilliant musicians of his generation. Since its founding, Jupiter has distinguished itself as a true virtuoso ensemble. The great freedom, energy, and improvisation skills of each individual musician allow them to perform together with passion, strength, and emotion. Jupiter brings this energy to All-Vivaldi, adapted from their 2019 debut recording with the Alpha label. From the vibrant charisma of “utterly persuasive” (Gramophone) mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre, to sparkling concertos for lute and cello performed by Dunford and Bruno Philippe, Jupiter Ensemble’s first ever Santa Fe performance will be a night to remember.

About Jupiter Ensemble

Created in 2018 by lutenist Thomas Dunford, Jupiter Ensemble was born from the meeting and friendship between Thomas and young and brilliant musicians of his generation: Lea Desandre, Jean Rondeau, Douglas Balliett, Bruno Philippe, Thibaut Garcia, Peter Whelan, and more. Since its founding, Jupiter has distinguished itself as a true virtuoso ensemble. The great freedom, energy, and improvisation skills of each individual musician allow them to perform together with passion, strength, and emotion across the different repertoires they play: from Vivaldi to Joaquin Rodrigo, to Handel, Destouches, Couperin, Mancini, and original compositions by Thomas Dunford and Douglas Balliett.

Jupiter’s first disc, released in autumn 2019 for the Alpha label, is dedicated to Vivaldi. Alternating extracts from operas and instrumental concerti, it highlights the different soloists of the Ensemble. The awards received since then for this recording confirm the success of this first project (Diamant Opéra Magazine, Caecilia Prize awarded by Union of the Belgian Music Press, International Classical Music Awards (ICMA), France Musique choice).

In September 2021, Jupiter released its second album, Amazone, Lea Desandre’s first recording recital, for the Erato-Warner Classics label. Composed of arias from French and Italian operas, this new album highlights arias from the 17th and 18th centuries. This program, built in collaboration with musicologist Yannis François, gives pride of place to unjustly forgotten pieces, some of which have never been played since their creation.

In autumn 2022, Jupiter released its third CD entitled Eternal Heaven, dedicated to Handel’s English oratorios, with soloists Lea Desandre and Iestyn Davies, again for the Erato Warner Classics label.

In 2022-2023, Jupiter will perform at the Wigmore Hall (London), Konzerthaus of Vienna, Opéra de Bordeaux, Luxembourg Philharmonie, Berlin Staatsoper, Köln Philharmonie, Opéra de Rouen, and in Quebec City, Philadelphia, Montreal, and Chicago during a 12-date American and Canadian tour in March 2023. This appearance marks Jupiter Ensemble’s New Mexico debut.
