Ring in the New Year with enchanting pianist Joyce Yang, conductor Joseph Illick, and the Performance Santa Fe Orchestra!
The 2:00 PM Family Preview Concert welcomes first-time symphony-goers of all ages – a stupendous chance to experience classical music’s timeless, enthralling artistry.
When then-19-year-old Juilliard first-year Joyce Yang won the silver medal at the 2005 Van Cliburn competition (the youngest person ever to do so), she was vaulted into the world of professional pianism. Since then, she has stunned audiences the world over with her “enchanting,” (The Globe and Mail) “knock-out” (The New York Times) playing and “million-volt presence.” (Dallas Morning News) She began lessons with her aunt at age four after receiving the piano as a birthday present. She moved to New York to study at Juilliard’s Pre-College division at age 11. Since then, she has toured with the New York Philharmonic, graduated from Juilliard with the Arthur Rubinstein prize, and received the Avery Fisher Career grant. Joyce Yang is an “Astonishing virtuoso with tremendous suggestive power and imagination.” (Neue Zurcher Zeitung)
Her luminous performance of Schumann’s piano concerto (her favorite piece, according to a recent Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra interview) will be followed by Beethoven’s triumphant Symphony no.3, “Eroica” (“heroic” in Italian). This intensely emotional symphony, twice the length of the day’s classical concerto, marked the beginning of the Romantic period. Famously, Beethoven originally dedicated the concerto to Napoleon, but upon hearing that Napoleon had proclaimed himself Emperor of the French, ripped the title page (bearing Bonaparte’s name) in half.
